Tam Makers, a community-driven makerspace in Mill Valley, California, is spearheading an art float project to encourage participation in democracy, inspire hope and effect social change. The project aims at reaching out specifically to young people and people of colour through art, music and technology, and will be presented during parades and festivals in Marin and California, to encourage attendance to the next elections.
The art float is unique, featuring a carousel decorated with waving hands pulled by a giant feathered serpent that represents Mother Earth. The stage on the float will display uplifting scenes from a better world, while performers will tell stories of hope, inviting attendees to express their ideas for social change at the podium or on the news ticker. The project is led by Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley, co-founders of Tam Makers, and involves a team of students and makers.
Volunteers are welcome to work on the project on Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings, and may contact the makers by email at float@tammakers.org or alternatively learn more about the project by visiting the website at www.tammakers.org/art-float/. Tam High School, civic, educational and art partners, and volunteers all support the project.
