The writer, Ian, is on a business trip to Warrington for an audit. Despite being audited, he is excited to be back in the northwest and sets off early in the morning. His wife, Jools, drops him off so he can take a walk before picking up his rental car. Unfortunately, the car given to him is a Toyota Yaris with no sat nav, so he had to rely on his phone for directions. Ian decides to make a detour to visit an old church where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and executed – St Mary and All Saints Church in Fotheringhay. He then ventures to Titchmarsh and sees a church with wall paintings. Driving through snow and traffic delays, Ian makes his way to Warrington where he stops to see an old friend before heading to his hotel – a golf resort.
