“Hand Tools Used in Planking of Monk Runabout SUNRAY, a Traditional Large Craft at Boat School in Port Hadlock, WA”

Port Hadlock WA - Boat School - Traditional Large Craft - Monk runabout SUNRAY - hand tools used during planking

The Sunray is a beautiful speedboat that was designed by Edwin Monk and presented in his 1934 book Boatbuilding. Monk was an accomplished designer from the Pacific Northwest who got his start working for his father’s shipyard in Seattle. Afterward, he worked with Ted Geary before branching out to start his own design firm in the late 1920s.

In 2008, a group of students under the supervision of Richard Wilmore built the Sunray using mahogany and Alaska Yellow cedar. This speedboat was part of the Traditional Large Craft class, which was also building the Crosby Catboat at the same time. After completion, the Sunray was sold to an owner in upstate New York, where it is used during summers on the Finger Lakes.
