St Mary, Good Bealings, Suffolk
I was out for a bike ride and church check out in the lovely sunshine of the last Saturday in October. I had a new digital camera to try out, and just after a pint at the pub in Grundisburgh, the most outward section of my trajectory, I was heading again into Ipswich by means of the Bealings.
To start with, Excellent Bealings, Regardless of our proximity to the sprawl of higher Ipswich, this church is in a decidedly rural location in the rolling, wooded fields to the north-east of the town. In the thinning mild of the late afternoon, the constructing seemed organic and natural, sitting down in its wild churchyard surrounded by open up land on all four sides, from which it is divided by a high-quality previous wall. A path by way of an avenue of trees qualified prospects from the most important road to the north east corner.
The tower is 15th century, and has a very good image area of interest. The Victorians and Edwardians were being occupied here (as we shall see) and much of the stonework of the nave and chancel is new, specially on the south aspect. The massive early 16th century brick north porch carries the iconography of the Seckford family members, and a different graphic area of interest. Beneath this, the white band carries the fading continues to be of a painted dedicatory inscription. The interior doorway retains the unique doorway, place listed here when the porch was created, and carved with standing figures, like 1 keeping a rosary. It opens into a very long, slender, marginally dim nave. To the east, the chancel seems high over the nave, the eye drawn to it by the coloured mild.
The distinction with the church at neighbouring Very little Bealings is putting. All Saints, Small Bealings, established in the middle of its attractive village, is simple and rustic, and total of gentle. Wonderful Bealings, by distinction, is darker and fairly serious within, glowing gently from the selection of late 19th and early 20th century glass.
Likely the very best of the glass is the established of the Will work of Mercy in the west window, which Mortlock attributes to Ward & Hughes. A lot of the rest of the glass appears to be by Lavers, Barraud & Westlake, but one particular window signed by Mayer & Co of Munich in the chancel depicts the younger Christ preaching in the Temple. Tere’s also a charming little lancet window depicting the Elevating of Jairus’s Daughter. This was a common matter in sentimental 19th century days as a memorial for a useless daughter, and the inscription beneath it remembers Charlotte Olivia Alice.
The nave is complete of Henry Ringham’s remarkable carvings, the greatest 19th century woodwork in the east of the county along with that Ipswich St Mary le Tower. The beautiful medieval originals, of which some are copies, can be discovered toward the west. The medieval image of the pelican in her piety is so equivalent to the one particular at close by Tuddenham St Martin that they are pretty much surely by the exact carver.
The tall finials on the choir pews are symbols of local landed gentry, relatively a lot less subtle than Ringham’s do the job, but energetic and amusing even so. They are apparently the work of Edward Moor, who was the father of the vicar here in the second 50 percent of the 19th century. The church incorporates two grand monuments. Just one is in the chancel, to John and Jan Clench, who encounter us with stern puritan expressions, as if contemplating their destiny. Their kneeling sons beneath are accompanied by two painted skulls. That in the nave is to Thomas and Margaret Seckford, descendants of the Thomas Seckford who constructed the porch. Most relocating of all is the late 19th century brass by the north door to Charlotte Allen, grand-daughter of the Edward Moor who carved the chancel finials. She died at the Holme, New Galloway in 1891, at the age of 38. A week later, her continues to be ended up laid to rest in the south-east corner of her aged home churchyard.
