St John The Baptist
Church of England
The church dates back to C12 and was allegedly launched in response to Pagan worship on the close by White Horse Hill.
Unusually, its interior was still left largely untouched by the Victorians, and as a final result it offers exceptional C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), stunning medieval stained glass, and extraordinary C15 to C17 woodwork, like high-quality bench finishes, panelling, pulpit and rood monitor.
Regrettably, in spite of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into this sort of a lousy state of repair service that it was positioned on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Register, and even faced imminent closure.
The good news is the regional neighborhood rallied close to to conserve their attractive community landmark and a restoration project will commence in the summer of 2015.
