The Elder Futhark (or Elder Fuþark, Older Futhark, Outdated Futhark) is the oldest form of the runic alphabet, utilized by Germanic tribes and Germanic dialects of the 2nd to 8th hundreds of years for inscriptions on artifacts (jewellery, amulets, applications, weapons) and rune stones. In Scandinavia, the script was simplified to the More youthful Futhark from the late 8th century, though the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians prolonged the Futhark which inevitably grew to become the Anglo-Saxon futhorc.
Unlike the youthful futhark which remained in use until eventually fashionable occasions, the knowledge of how to read the Elder Futhark was neglected, and it was not till 1865 that the Norwegian scholar Sophus Bugge managed to decipher it.
