Granville Island is a peninsula and shopping district in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is situated in Fake Creek right across from Downtown Vancouver’s peninsula, below the south end of the Granville Avenue Bridge.
Granville Island was once an industrial production region, but is now a major tourist vacation spot, delivering amenities such as a general public industry, a large marina, a lodge, the Emily Carr College of Artwork and Design (named in honour of the artist), Arts Umbrella, Phony Creek Group Centre, several theatres together with the Arts Club Theatre Corporation and Carousel Theatre, and wide variety of procuring places. There are two industrial spots remaining from the Island’s heyday: a equipment shop and cement plant. The island is really popular with travelers and locals alike.
Since its redevelopment in the 1970s, Granville Island has maintained a healthy local community of craft studios, like: a Glassblowing studio, two Co-op Printmaking studios, a High-quality Artwork Print Studio, a Luthier, a grasp saké maker, numerous Jewellers, the B.C. Potter’s Guild Gallery, The Crafthouse Gallery, The Circle Craft store, artwork galleries, boatbuilders, a Wooden Co-op Store, Woodworkers studios and so on. A weekly Farmer’s Current market has been ongoing since the early 1990’s – this was the first present-day Farmer’s Market in Vancouver.
Granville Island Brewing Co. is also the identify of a beer company which originated on Granville Island in 1984, but whose primary foundation of functions was moved to Kelowna, British Columbia some time afterwards. In 2009 it was bought by Molson’s Brewery and continues to brew smaller batches of its kinds at the original web-site, and features beer-tasting and tours of their brewing facilities.
In 2004, Job for Community Spaces named Granville Island “1 of the World’s Good Areas”.
