Capital, Hoarwithy

A shock awaits the visitor to Hoarwithy, for in this article is a church not like any other in Herefordshire, or in the region for that issue. St Catherine’s asserts its presence with a bell tower that could appear to be a lot more at residence in Tuscany than the rural Herefordshire countryside! The overall church is designed in a lavish Italian-motivated Neo-Romanesque and appears to be like its greatest when bathed in the sunlight that most evokes the land that encouraged it.

The existing church is the consequence of the rebuilding of an present chapel here in 1854 when William Poole was appointed vicar and J.P. Seddon subsequently appointed architect. Seddon’s church is a exceptional eyesight entire with an apsed chancel and towering bell-tower and most memorable of all a coated ‘cloister’ colonnade wrapping by itself all over the south and west faces of the making to guide the customer to the west entrance. There is a delight in detail below with carved capitals and mosaic floors that show no cost was spared on this undertaking.

Inside of the church the main nave is a substantial corridor underneath an open picket roof, (considerably of this part currently being a reworking of the earlier chapel) although past the chancel is divided by three rounded arches with the mosaic-topped apse over and above which is the most sumptuously adorned component of the building with intricate capitals and carved woodwork. There is some putting glass too, in point my very first at any time check out here was back in 2000 as portion of the staff releading the home windows in the west wall (subsequently this more modern visit was the initial time I’d ever witnessed the church no cost of scaffolding!).

Hoarwithy church is a true gem, a delightful and tiny recognised oddity effectively truly worth searching for out. It is generally saved open up and welcoming for readers to appreciate, and on this celebration neighborhood artists have been exhibiting below (fairly fantastic they have been way too, I was tempted so a lot I acquired a few of prints).
