1872. A uncommon glimpse, actually, of the interior sanctum of the aircraft carrier’s quarterdeck.
Taken late in the carrier’s service life, a single would have to say that this symbolically important location of the ship is evidently not as well stored up as it must be. Glimpse at the dirty woodwork of the latticed storage benches and the dirty teak deck, aspect-protected in the foreground by irregular cheap matting. Evidently the days of holystoning of teak decks in the RAN are around [called holystoning, obviously, because sailors had to kneel doing it].

Picture: Michael Melliar-Phelps, it appears in Ross Gillett’s e-book ‘HMAS MELBOURNE – 25 Yrs} Nautical Press, Sydney 1980] p68.
