Pembroke College chapel was crafted in 1664-5 at the sole price of Matthew Wren (Bishop of Ely & Fellow of Pemrboke Higher education) and was the really initial get the job done of his nephew, the popular architect Christopher Wren. It is a pleasant Baroque rectangle of a developing that was developed to switch a past chapel in other places in the higher education (later on transformed into a library) with a small cupola more than the pedimented west stop. It continues to be as crafted by Wren apart from the chancel that was prolonged in 1880 to the layouts of G.G.Scott (externally noticeable in the change from brick to stone, but significantly far more harmonious in just).

The chapel is entered at the north-west corner below a cloistered walkway from the quadrangle and just after turning still left through the ante-chapel a person is satisfied by the sight of the beautiful white plastered interior attractively framed by the wood columns supporting the organ gallery. The woodwork of the organ and stalls is richly carved and the decorative plasterwork of the partitions and ceiling in particular create a most satisfying outcome. The chancel outside of (Scott’s addition from 1880) is framed by a rich arch supported by Corinthian columns and has a Venetian east window crammed with glass extra in 1906, the only coloured window in the chapel. Shown in the ante-chapel is a pleasant medieval alabaster carving depicting the Virgin with St Michael.

Pembroke School Chapel appears to be additional visitor pleasant on the entire and is worthy of stopping to bask in the beauty of its interior and marvel at the first architectural operate of the great Christopher Wren.
