Nave Ceiling, Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge

Nave ceiling with rich painted decoration by Morris & Co.

Jesus Higher education may well not be the oldest of Cambridge’s faculties, but irrespective it can still boast the oldest chapel. The present cruciform creating was formerly the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns established in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the present school was founded on the same site by Bishop John Alcock with the previous convent church tailored to use as the existing college or university chapel, which included a variety of modifications to its construction together with the demolition of many components such as the increased component of the nave. The present chapel is so a lowered model of the unique church, but it is still distinctly various in form from other school chapels, producing its former monastic use all the extra obvious.

A person approaches the chapel from the north west by way of a cloister (substantially altered from its primary point out) and it is quickly obvious that substantially of the nave has been changed by college properties, reducing it to related dimensions to the transepts. The central tower is square and considerably squat, a late medieval rebuild just after the foundation of the higher education.

Within the truncated nave there would be a feeling of starkness from the simple white partitions have been it not for the splashes of color from the windows and the richly adorned ceiling, all wonderful examples of Pre-Raphaelite art by William Morris and his circle, the chapel home windows becoming mostly stuffed with a sequence of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The influence is rich and gratifying and has breathed new existence into this historic constructing. The choir over and above is partially hid by prosperous woodwork, the chancel display screen and the elaborately carved stalls which retain some notable examples of late medieval carving. The choir by itself is a handsome case in point of Early English architecture with slender lancet windows, these remaining crammed with Hardman glass, the only windows not adorned with Morris & Co layouts.

Jesus Faculty Chapel is 1 of my absolute favourites, a delightful building with some beautiful glass. Happily it seems to be one particular of the extra visitor welcoming schools in Cambridge possessing generally observed it attainable to wander about freely while someway preventing the crowds of holidaymakers that specified other Cambridge faculties catch the attention of.
