St James, Barkestone

The church of SS Peter & Paul at Barkestone was significantly rebuilt in the early 19th century leaving the medieval west tower and spire and areas of the ironstone chancel linked by a new nave in contrasting white stone.

Inside the 19th century rebuilding is even far more evident, with the total inside seemingly of this time (even though the nave columns are most likely the original kinds). Despite this loss of antiquity there are significant late medieval survivals in this article in the exceptional woodwork of the lectern, designed from two exquisitely carved former bench-finishes (embellished with great carvings of St James & St John the Baptist under canopies, among the quite most effective illustrations of late medieval wood carving). There is a further more bench in the chancel with carved figures on the arm rests. The modest chancel screen is also historical as is the worn 14th century effigy in a recess in the north aisle.

The church is generally kept locked exterior of solutions, but inspite of its comprehensive rebuilding is still worthy of a pay a visit to.
