The Inn at Irwin Gardens, a 1910 Edwardian mansion developed by a relatives of bankers. A wonderful 13,000-square-foot residence and Italianate gardens. 608 Fifth Avenue, Columbus, IN 47201 irwingardens.com Vacation 2016, Working day 9.
Constructed in 1864 by Joseph I. Irwin, Columbus banker and businessman, this Italianate style and design was transformed in 1880. On the other hand, to accommodate four generations of the Irwin spouse and children, the residence has been enlarged and redesigned over the decades. The present-day mansion was the outstanding achievement of Henry A. Phillips, a Massachusetts architect, who was employed by William G. Irwin in 1910. The intricate detail of the in depth fine woodwork and moldings through the house are reminiscent of a European estate. The old brick exterior was covered by tapestry brick with stone trim, and several new chimneys, which are now a well known aspect of the house, were being extra. The roof was recovered in slate and the pitch was altered, giving for a extra roomy 3rd flooring. On the east, a raised terrace was included to link the dwelling to the adjoining Back garden.

The highlight of this two-acre residence is the backyard garden, a gorgeous maze based on the Casa degli Innamorati in Pompeii. A number of fountains and a very long pool are the focal issue of a decreased sunken yard. There is a statue less than the heart arch of the backyard dwelling designed from a lakeside framework at the Villa of Hadrian at Tivoli, Italy. Pompeian murals accent the backyard garden residence. A tall brick wall is rounded in imitation of 16th-century gardens in Mantua, Italy. Wisteria vines on the terrace’s pergolas have been planted in 1911, and proceed to bloom in the spring. Only the English sundial and a Japanese bronze elephant sculpture that is a duplicate of 1 at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Reasonable pavilion do not stick to the Italian motif.
Clessie Cummins, founder of Cummins Engine Co. served as chauffeur to the Irwin spouse and children. It was on this property that Clessie first began ‘tinkering’ in the garage, in which he developed the suggestions and technology for a significant-speed diesel engine. With the backing of William Glanton Irwin, his thoughts grew to become the cornerstone item of Cummins, Inc., now a $13 billion Fortune 500 firm. W.G. Irwin’s good-nephew J. Irwin Miller, who was born and elevated in this residence, was President & Chairman of Cummins, he and his spouse Xenia experienced the vision to type the Cummins Foundation that in the end led to the improvement of the trove of present day architecture in Columbus, Indiana.
