In 1650 Oliver Cromwell laid siege to the Castle and sent the adhering to letter to the ninth Lord Borthwick, on 18 November 1650:

“Sir – I thought match to ship this trumpet to you, to enable you know, that if you please to stroll away with your enterprise, and provide the Residence to this sort of as I shall mail to acquire it, you shall have liberty to have off your arms and goods and such other necessaries as you have.
You have harboured these types of get-togethers in your property as have basely and inhumanly murdered our gentlemen, if you necessitate me to bend my cannon versus you, you may assume what I question you will not be delighted with. I assume your present Remedy, and rest your servant.
O Cromwell”

Lord Borthwick did not reply promptly, but following bombardment by cannon which ruined the east parapet and tore a substantial cavity in the stonework, he came to conditions with Cromwell, leaving the castle with his spouse and baby and moveable products. The scars on the stonework can still be noticed these days and a duplicate of Cromwell’s first letter hangs in the Good Hall.

When Cromwell’s forces remaining the Castle it lay derelict for several a long time. In 1813 the stones in the Wonderful Corridor fireplace were dislodged by a tree expanding by means of. The Borthwick loved ones removed the tree and restored the chimney breast and then in 1903 the Terrific Hall’s woodwork was renewed.
