Older people have the head and neck white with a wide black supercilium that terminates in the slender, dangling crest, and bluish-black streaks on the entrance of the neck. The scapular feathers are elongated and the feathers at the base of the neck are also fairly elongated. Immature birds deficiency the darkish stripe on the head and are typically duller in look than adults, with a gray head and neck, and a modest, darkish grey crest. The pinkish-yellow beak is extended, straight and impressive, and is brighter in colour in breeding adults. The iris is yellow and the legs are brown and extremely lengthy.

The most important simply call is a loud croaking “fraaank”, but a wide range of guttural and raucous noises are read at the breeding colony. The male makes use of an advertisement contact to really encourage a feminine to be a part of him at the nest, and the two sexes use many greeting calls just after a pair bond has been recognized. A loud, harsh “schaah” is made use of by the male in driving other birds from the vicinity of the nest and a tender “gogogo” expresses stress and anxiety, as when a predator is nearby or a human walks past the colony. The chicks utter loud chattering or ticking noises.

In some plumages it has a white throat but the white is restricted below the gape contrary to in the a lot larger sized terrific cormorant. Sexes are comparable, but non-breeding adults and juveniles are browner.
