Thorsen House by Greene and Greene, Berkeley

This is the Thorsen Residence in Berkeley by Greene and Greene. Charles and Henry Greene had been architect brothers from Southern California who were encouraged by the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century and by Japanese style found at the World’s Good. Lots of of their most well-known homes are in Pasadena – the Gamble Property is pehaps the most properly-recognized and is open to the community for tours. This a single, built as a non-public dwelling close to 1910, is on Fraternity Row in the vicinity of UC Berkeley and now properties a fraternity, Sigma Phi.

“Influenced by British Arts and Crafts architects like C.F.A. Voysey and William Morris, by East Coast Shingle-fashion builders like Henry Hobson Richardson, and by Swiss chalets and Japanese woodwork, the Greenes designed a special fashion of California “bungalow.”

The Thorsen Home, one particular of their number of properties in Northern California, is thought of just one of their most effective functions — and just one of the greatest preserved, says Ted Bosley, director of the Gamble Dwelling.”
