St Dubricius’s church sits in a loop in the highway at the hilltop village of Ballingham and is a modest creating consisting of nave and chancel with a west tower and spire. The most noteworthy attribute externally is the 15th century south porch which has a vaulted ceiling, an unusual luxurious for what must usually have been a very small parish.
The interior is a simple area with the main division amongst nave and chancel formed by a pretty filigree wooden screen of 19th century date, whilst the area above it is boarded more than to variety a form of picket tympanum which have to be a much older attribute. The woodwork of the monitor and the 17th century pulpit are the primary features of curiosity in listed here, the windows are all plain quarry-glazed.
I was pleasantly shocked to locate the church open as I had been led to believe it wasn’t generally so. Nonetheless what I hadn’t realised until I bought residence was the fact the church experienced been closed to parish use completely for the past couple several years and struggling with an unsure long term, as a result I was even luckier than I imagined to have been ready to get within! I can only assume anyone had opened it up for servicing as there was some devices in the porch and a cable likely up into the tower, so it is feasible anyone was up there but if so I failed to see or hear them. Seems to have been a bit of a fluke me having in here (all the happier after that steep climb up listed here far too) which is the form of fortunate chance I listen to about other men and women owning but hardly ever transpires to me that way, so this designed a refreshing improve!
I would warning any individual else imagining of dropping in listed here that they are not likely to discover this church open up offered its redundant standing, but the vaulted porch is at minimum available.
