Ovaltine Cafe neon (1942)

249-251 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, Canada

The exuberant Ovaltine Cafe neon signage with its distinctive arrow-shaped projecting indication, made by Wallace Neon in 1942, evokes the 1940s and 1950s, Vancouver’s ‘golden age’ of neon, when there was reportedly much more neon in Vancouver than wherever in the environment, other than for Shanghai, China.

The interior of the cafe has survived intact, and contains a coffee counter, booths, mirrors and varnished woodwork.

The Edwardian developing which houses the Ovaltine Cafe was constructed in 1912, created by architect Arthur Julius Hen for operator R. B. Hamilton.
