Attention-grabbing discoveries beneath the rest room tile.
The authentic wall was painted a gold color. The reduce part of the wall experienced faux subway tiles: scored lines in the plaster that were then painted with shiny enamel to develop a reasonably convincing “tiled” wall. (This was also completed in our kitchen, which has a fake sq. tile wainscoting.)

At some really early level, a stripe of black paint was added to the prime and base of the “tile” wainscoting. (Possibly the similar time as black paint was included to the trim in the kitchen area — 20s or 30s?) This is amusing simply because my program was to place a black stripe of tile at the prime and base of my subway tile tub encompass! I am restoring it to its before appearance devoid of even figuring out it, until now…

Soon after that, it was painted turquoise. Sure, the similar turquoise as the dwelling room and kitchen area ended up painted at that time. A person in the dwelling genuinely appreciated turquoise.

Someday after that, the tiled surround was included around it all.

The authentic toilet most very likely had a freestanding (clawfoot?) tub. The residence was not terribly significant-end a doing work class dwelling in a operating course community. The bogus tile as a substitute of true tile is one indicator that the property was reasonably priced. And but… the woodwork in the residing and dining place would be pretty pricey to do currently. Even a minimal-stop property of 1911 seems to be really high-close to us now.
