Artist Statement
The platters I have despatched to this exhibition mix numerous ceramic traditions. The 1st is, The Palace Artwork Pot. Palace Art Pots have been produced to reveal prosperity and electrical power. They had been designed to explain to a tale, to commemorate an event or a man or woman, and to show skill and obstacle the talents of the artisans who manufactured them. The 2nd tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were being a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Motion of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and previous tradition is the Just one-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Motion.
Humor as a result of the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been supplied brief shift as a really serious emotion. Artwork get the job done that employs humor and has been actively excised from collections of critical art. It may be that we do not comprehend the function of humor as perfectly as we understand the functionality of the other thoughts.
In the perform offered I have tried out to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are significant to give them a somewhat overblown perception of their very own worth and to be ready to be seen from a length . They are intended for the wall and the table. The massive sizing to fit the relevance of huge gatherings.
I have tried to swap historical designs with objects decreased to sample. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of particular passions. Illustrations or photos of transform of the century technologies, (the Equipment Age), are a personal beloved. Issue make any difference ranges from humorous depiction of day to day objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be to be sufficient for the kind and top quality of graphic that the topic requires. They have a cartoon glimpse as opposed to the crisp complexity of great china.
The clay system, a purple earthenware, is heavily potted and would make no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica design and is performed incredibly a great deal like a watercolor on smooth paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may possibly have an further firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment applying an electric kiln.
