Patrick Hugh Holahan was born in 1897. His father had served in the British Army in India and Afghanistan. `He grew up in Rutland Cottages in the north of the metropolis. In 1909, together with his older brother Garry, he joined Na Fianna Eireann, the Irish nationalist response to Baden Powell’s boy scouts.
In 1914 he assisted with the Howth Gun Working, working to the conclude of the pier to seem a bugle when the Asgard appeared. As Easter 1916 approached he was inducted into the IRB and educated of the plans for the Rising. Alongside with other Fianna Eireann associates and Irish Volunteers he participated in the attack on the Journal Fort in the Phoenix Park which was to signal the start of the Growing in Dublin.
Adhering to this he joined the 1st battalion under Cmdt Ned Daly in the Four Courts Garrison. He participated in an assault on Broadstone Prepare Station, refusing to retreat until eventually he assisted 1 of his company who was isolated. In direction of the conclusion of Easter Week he was appointed Captain of his organization following Nicholas Laffan was injured. With the assist of the Capuchins he negotiated a truce with Lieut Col Taylor on Easter Saturday. He was certain by a penned notice from Pearse that he was to surrender telling his adult males that this was “the toughest task” they ended up named upon to execute.
Immediately after the Rising, Paddy fought in the War of Independence, top the raid on Collinstown Aerodrome. He fought on the anti-treaty side in the Civil War.
All through the Crisis he was appointed Commandant of the 26th battalion that brought together men from both of those sides of the Civil War and assisted mend the bitter wounds of that time. Later he was OC of the Development Corps.
Paddy was President of the Irish Union of Woodworkers from 1920 to 1935.
Patrick married Johanna Holahan in 1920 (Johanna joined Cumann na mBan just after the 1916 Growing and is pictured with Paddy higher than) and they experienced five young children.
Paddy was a person of high basic principle who considered that his term was his bond and that “a position value executing was worth executing well”. In later yrs he was in cost of the Business office of Public Works in the Phoenix Park, he died in 1946 and is buried in Mount Jerome cemetery.
