A reredos, or retable, is a decorative screen at the rear of the altar of a church, frequently carved and painted. A solitary artist who began his operate in 1608 could have crafted this wooden reredos.
The ornate woodwork can be traced to 1687 when Domingo Angel, a wealthy Burgos silk-producer, set up it in the chapel connected to the Congregation of Saint Philip Neri, at Ezcaray, Spain. The chapel was dismantled in 1925 just after being weakened in the Spanish Civil War, and the reredos was offered to a New York art vendor to elevate funds for the impoverished village. A private collector in Pasadena then acquired it.
Soon after its new owner’s loss of life, the reredos was obtained for use in the cathedral then envisioned for Los Angeles on Wilshire Boulevard. Nevertheless, the reredos was transported to Mission San Fernando and quickly saved.
In 1941, the “Excaray Chapel Exhibit” was opened to viewing by the general public at San Fernando Mission. In 1953, the reredos, restored by California artist Judy Serbaroli, was set up in the newly erected university student chapel of Queen of Angels Seminary, adjacent to the mission. It remained there until finally the conclusion was produced to area it in the Cathedral of Our Girl of the Angels.
Measuring about 20-six ft wide and twenty feet substantial, the elaborately carved, polychrome and gilded reredos depicts a crucifix surrounded by saints, with the Madonna and Kid overhead.

The present installation was manufactured doable by generous assist from the J. Paul Getty Have confidence in. The conservation treatment was directed by John Griswold of Griswold Associates who taken off previous restoration, stabilized flaking and crumbling, secured sculptural aspects with seismic mounts, and reintegrated areas of missing gold and paint. Brian Considine, Chief of Decorative Arts Conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum, contributed his skills and scientific investigation.
