DO.LYM Sidmouth Road Tollhouse, Lyme Regis

Former Highway Toll Property at Sidmouth Highway Gate, now Umbrella Cottage, Sidmouth Road, LYME REGIS (WEST DORSET District). The principal composition is thought to have been created for the Lyme Regis Turnpike Rely on (Charmouth to Whimple Division) in the 19th century in the type of a lodge with daring ornamentation. Currently domestic home with only minimal improvements to the initial tollhouse construction on the A3052, Lyme Regis to Sidmouth street. Exterior attributes solitary-storey on octagonal ground plan, getting a pyramidal roof, with walls mostly of render, roofed in thatch, square headed windows with tracery, an open porch with a sq. headed doorway thatched alcoves close to octagonal centre with ornate woodwork. A incredibly ornate thatched lodge with two phases of extension to the rear. Pottery product suggests it was a tollhouse but it is feasible that it was a lodge to Cobb Home (or served the two capabilities). Not Stated. NGR: SY 3320 9204: Tollhouse National ID: DO.LYM (see turnpikes.org.british isles)
