The place I stay I usually see the very same planes all above once more, the English manufactured no 3s, 4s and 5s.

So my heart will normally pounce when I locate one thing considerably less normal.

This is a Stanley no 5 1/2 jack plane. The type designation is 16 as in 1933-1941.

Even though this is the initially Stanley with the so known as “new style frog”, I extremely considerably like this style. The types I’ve had have been incredibly competent and nicely created planes.

This example is in excellent employed affliction with no other blemishes than a well repaired rear tackle and a scuffed lever cap

The no 5 1/2 may well not function at the prime of the collective woodworkers sizzling record. Since my individual preffered airplane is a Millers Falls no 15, i.e. equal to the Stanley no 5 1/2, I can only say good thing about this design.

I come to feel this brings together two incredibly excellent points in a plane, bodyweight and duration. Confident enough, there are constantly limitations what you can do with a particular lane, but I dislike the no 6, I only use my no 7 for flattening and as a great deal as I like the no 5, I incredibly much like the additional body weight and planing width that the no 5 1/2 can give.

So, thumbs up on al accounts.

1 issue though. The Stanley no 5 1/2 is clearly and visibly skinnier than it’s MF counterpart. The casting on the MF is thicker both of those in the sole and on the cheeks. So if you get to opt for, Id say, choose the MF no 15.
