Mural Fragment, Leebotwood

St Mary’s at Leebotwood is a modest church, a short single chamber developing without the need of structural division amongst nave and chancel (like a lot of old churches in this generally very rural region). The west tower is afterwards and curiously rectangular in strategy.

Within the dominant effect is of being surrounded by woodwork, with half the internal peak accounted for by the steeply pitched roof and box pews below. Past the partitions of the chancel are lined with numerous memorial tablets, some of quite great high quality, having said that the earliest attribute of take note is the considerable fragment of a 14th century wall painting on the north facet of the nave.

St Mary’s is a small building but an fascinating 1, and fortunately open up and welcoming to guests.
