North Chapel Window, Sutton Coldfield

North / Vesey Chapel east window by Ballantine of Edinburgh, c1870.

Sutton Coldfield’s ancient parish church of Holy Trinity experienced prolonged been on my ‘to do’ listing, possessing unsuccessful to get entry on my very last take a look at a pair of many years back. I might been capable to enjoy it truly is red sandstone exterior, with it can be combination of 15th century and Victorian components, but it’s inner physical appearance and contents mainly remained a secret to me, till now.

I was extremely amazed by the interior with it’s rich jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a serious gem with plenty of desire. The church by itself is pretty restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and afterwards rebuildings and expose galleries in the aisles. It all appeared really gloomy with so significantly pink stone and dim woodwork, but C.E.Bateman’s early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is attractive and does considerably to cheer up an otherwise sombre inside. There is some good post-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, a great deal acquiring been ejected from Worcester Cathedral throughout Scott’s restoration.

There is some very good glass, the east window is pretty fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favorite glass was the fine 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, along with the Yoxall & Whitford home windows close by in the south chapel. There are some fascinating monuments, various fine tablets, a significant Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the original 1550s figure but looking so totally renewed I was convinced it was a modern day pastiche (Pevsner attributes also substantially tlc!). There is also a fine Norman font, originally in nearby Nether Whitacre church prior to it’s rebuilding.

I had listened to very good things about this church following my initial tried pay a visit to, so just after concluding my business enterprise in neighbouring Streetly I came straight right here. It is sad to say even now frequently held locked, so I tried inquiring at the parish centre reverse, and soon after an originally somewhat lukewarm reception (possibly more warning would have assisted) a woman kindly supplied to open up up for me. I stated I was eager to see the church and it is furnishings as they are, getting heard about ideas for a important reordering, while owing to the enormous expenses associated this was dismissed as getting some way off, probably 5 or so many years, so no concrete options just however.
