RICHMOND
Arrival of the Rebel Typical Lee.
HE IS ENTHUSIASTICALLY GREETED.

Mr. William H. Merriam’s Despatch.
New York Herald Rooms, Richmond, Va., April 16 – 2 A.M.
Constructive arrival of Typical R. E. Lee in Richmond.

“Normal Robert E. Lee, these days commanding the rebel armies, actually arrived in Richmond yesterday at 50 %-past three o’clock. The initially intimation of the arrival of the General was the call designed on Lieutenant H. S. Merrell, Publish Quartermaster of Richmond, for forage and stabling for 20 horses in behalf of General Lee. Soon just after a few o’clock General Lee arrived on the pontoon bridge that spans the James amongst Richmond and Manchester, an opposite town. Listed here an enormous crowd experienced gathered to acquire him, and he was greeted with cheers upon cheers, the acclamations of the people, so generously and heartily bestowed, visibly influencing him. Whenever he passed Union officers they raised their caps, in recognition of his good genius, no less than his regard for truth and regularity in refusing to draw his sword outside the house of his indigenous Virginia. As he proceeded alongside the streets to his home in Franklin street, the group elevated in figures, and the cheers grew louder.

The General was accompanied by five customers of his personnel, Normal Lee and all wearing swords. As he dismounted at his home the hundreds of persons who surrounded him yet again greeted him with acclaim, and so several as could get near his person shook him heartily by the hand. A person rebel officer, failing to catch his hand, seized him by the extremities of his coat – “touching the hem of his garment.” The excellent feeling in relation to Normal Lee was common to each Unionists and rebels, and was thoroughly shared in by all.

Standard Lee seemed exceedingly strong, and is undoubtedly a most splendid specimen of a soldier and gentleman, with honest forehead, gray hair, bronzed countenance and armed service beard. He will likely see the armed service dignitaries right here, quietly, before he leaves the town all over again -the getting spot of which latter occasion is not now positively recognized.”

The Return of the U. S. Armies
[From The Richmond Papers of Monday.]

“Saturday was devoted to a navy spectacle, the grandest, most imposing, of everything of ‘the sort witnessed by the citizens of Richmond because the war started, the homeward march of a part of the Military of the Potomac.

In accordance to the estimate of one particular of the basic officers who was acquainted with the power of the corps, the quantity of soldiers who handed by means of was among 45,000 and 50,000, The Military of the Potomac is composed of 5 corps for that reason the troops that have handed by compose only some thing more than a third of the toughness of that military.

The overall line of the two corps was five hrs and 3 quarters in passing a specified point -.from 9 1/2 A. M. to 3 1/2 P. M. The rear was effectively upon the suburbs of the town at sunset, and the military bivouacked for the night about 10 miles east of Richmond, on its route to Washington.

The march of the troops previous the Libby prison, which was provided in the route, in get to gratify the troopers, was marked alternately by cheers and groans from these who, from time to time, in the development of the war have been so regrettable as to be involuntary inmates of its inhospitable wards. Regardless of whether designedly or not, the programme of route took the line past Gen Lee’s home, Franklin avenue, and people of the troopers who were informed of the possible proximity of that distinguished main of the late Accomplice forces, cheered lustily as the residence was approached and passed. It is reported Normal Lee stood at the closed blinds of just one of the home windows, and viewed the pageant for a number of minutes.

Some thought of the immense business of the commissary department of a huge military could be acquired from the fact that the commissary of Typical Sherman’s military had orders on Saturday to difficulty one million six hundred thousand rations for the sustenance of the military on its march from Manchester to Washington.

Sherman’s Army is on the march from Richmond, by using Town Stage, and the van is envisioned to get to Manchester to working day and go through Richmond to day or tomorrow, en route for Washington. It is presumed the army authorities will accord them the exact same reception and escort which signalized the passage of the Second and Fifth Corps on Saturday.”

Mrs. Lee During the War — Something About “The Mess” and its Occupants.
By Sally Nelson Robins.

“A stranger passing down Franklin Street, in the city of Richmond, Va., may well question why carriages are halted prior to, and pedestrians continuously stop and gaze at, a basic brick residence involving Seventh and Eighth Streets….…

When Common Lee came to Richmond in ‘61, this residence was offered to him for his armed forces dwelling by Mr. John Stewart, a wealthy and deserving citizen of Henrico County. It was nicknamed “The Mess,” and, just before Mrs. Lee and her daughters arrived, was occupied by the Common (when he was in city), Typical Custis Lee, Significant Coxe, Captain Ferdinand C. Hutter, Robert Shirley Carter, Chapman Leigh and other folks — a merry occasion of young officers, who made the property ring with jest and track, and who scoffed at threat and defeat.

The wrench from Arlington was not without having tears …Arlington was the dwelling file of Mrs. Lee and her ancestors the museum of the most entire collection of Washington relics on the earth the scene of Robert Lee’s courtship and relationship the birthplace of all of his young children but the grandeur of Arlington was around, the pall of war hung above the land…

When Mrs. Lee left Arlington she went to “Cedar Grove, ” the plantation of a kinsman on the Potomac, wherever she remained for some time….

Afterward they went to “Chantilly, “one of the stately residences of Fairfax on their way to the “White Household.” Mrs. Lee was then cheerful and confident of the achievements of the bring about for which she experienced now built terrific sacrifice. It was not long ahead of the “White House,” in its uncovered issue upon the Pamunky, and perfectly in the lines of the United States army, was deemed unsafe, and the tiny party began for Richmond. They had been manufactured prisoners of war at Hanover Courthouse, and detained there for one particular 7 days. Just before Mrs. Lee remaining the “White House” she tacked on the entrance doorway a card bearing the request that Union soldiers would not desecrate the dwelling of George Washington’s spouse.

Mrs. Lee’s knowledge as a prisoner was quite dismal …she sent for Typical McClelland, and questioned him to mail her to Richmond. In consequence of this job interview, her carriage was ordered…and a Union soldier mounted the boot and drove the females to the Accomplice lines under a flag of truce. Then a Confederate soldier took his place, and drove Mrs. Lee into Richmond to 707 East Franklin Avenue. The second she entered the door she turned a person of “The Mess ” she was ready to share a soldier’s life….

….“ No. 707″ is a substantial brick house now substantially down city. During the war it was in the most trendy section of Richmond, just two squares from the “Capitol Park” and St. Paul’s Church. It was designed by Norman Stewart, of Rothsay, Scotland, who came to this nation early in the century, and settled in Petersburg. Throughout the yr 1812, he was banished to Columbia, lest, as a British subject matter, he might be perilous to the State. Right after the war was over he arrived to Richmond and became a prosperous citizen. He obtained a tract of land on the outskirts of the city, on which he built a sq. of significant brick properties, in the handsomest of which he lived with his servant Stephen. He was a quaint, intelligent, durable Scotchman, who, to the working day of his loss of life (1858), wore a brown wig, extended black silk hose, with bright garter buckles and in winter a cape or scarf worn just after the fashion of a shepherd.

The household for its working day was handsome and commodious, with walnut woodwork and significant home windows, large halls, spacious rooms and broad verandas. When Mr. Norman Stewart died, he still left the residence to his nephew, Mr. John Stewart of “Brookhill,” through whose courtesy Normal Lee occupied it throughout the war and considering the fact that, in memory of Typical Lee, his widow and daughters have introduced it to the Virginia Historic Society….

Quickly after Mrs. Lee came to Richmond a cruel rheumatism sure her to her chair [wheel chair]. In the again space, opening on a veranda shadowed by ailanthus trees, her days ended up spent….

At the time of the evacuation, when Richmond was a maddening bedlam, Mrs. Lee by yourself was tranquil and correctly helpless. People today solely frantic rushed from pillar to article, the streets ran with whiskey, and the mob acquired on its knees beside the gutters and sipped the fiery stream. Hearth broke free and the full metropolis was in hazard. The fire attained Eighth and Franklin streets, and the house future door to “The Mess ” caught. But Mrs. Lee would not go. Buddies besought her to fly. Four instances did a Union officer appear , in a carriage and four horses, to acquire her away, and so keen was he to transfer her that he requested the trunks to be thrown out of the window, but she refused to budge, requested the soldiers out and created her daughter Mary continue to keep the doorway of the house, which caught hearth many moments, but was promptly extinguished and Mrs. Lee’s personal text were being : “That it was unattainable to exaggerate the sort attention of the Union troopers to her.”

When the warrior returned from Appomattox to “The Mess” she was waiting around for him, and the ease and comfort of the situation she lovingly administered. The truth that accentuates the fascination of “707 East Franklin Street” is that Standard Lee came listed here from Appomattox, rode up to the door on “Traveller,” walked up the broad, stone techniques with head erect and a continuous eye – upstairs to his wife’s retreat – two chastened souls superb amidst defeat! The keen mob encircled the home, buddy and foe clamored to behold him, but the doorway was shut and guarded, and all those only came in who ended up most pricey. From that instant till the day he still left Richmond he under no circumstances went out of the household right until soon after darkish. Upon the back verandas he took his exercise, Below he was by itself he could ruminate and ponder if what was finished experienced been sensibly.”

CHAPTER VIII – THE SURRENDER

“….Immediately after two months of marching and resting, I arrived in Richmond [April 1865] and located my father there, in the residence on Franklin Road, now the rooms of the “Virginia Historical Modern society,” and also my mother, brother, and sisters. They had been all substantially relieved at my reappearance.

As perfectly as I can recall my father at this time, he appeared to be incredibly well bodily, however he appeared older, grayer, additional quiet and reserved. He appeared extremely worn out, and was generally glad to speak of any other matter than that of the war or anything at all pertaining thereto. We all experimented with to cheer and support him. And the individuals of Richmond and of the complete South were being as kind and considerate as it was possible to be. Without a doubt, I think their fantastic kindness exhausted him. He appreciated it all, was courteous, grateful, and polite, but he had been less than such a awful pressure for numerous decades that he desired the time and quiet to get again his power of heart and mind. All types and conditions of people today came to see him: officers and troopers from equally armies, statesmen, politicians, ministers of the Gospel, mothers and wives to check with about husbands and sons of whom they experienced read nothing. To hold him from staying overtaxed by this incessant stream of guests, we shaped a sort of guard of the youthful adult males in the home, some of whom took it by turns to keep the doorway and, if attainable, convert strangers away. My father was light, type, and well mannered to all, and never ever willingly, so significantly as I know, refused to see any just one.

Dan Lee, late of the Confederate States Navy, my initially cousin, and myself, just one day experienced demand of the front door, when at it appeared a Federal soldier, accompanied by a darkey carrying a massive willow basket crammed to the brim with provisions of each individual type. The male was Irish all over, and confirmed by his uniform and carriage that he was a “frequent,” and not a volunteer. On our asking him what he preferred, he replied that he required to see Common Lee, that he experienced listened to down the street the Common and his spouse and children were struggling for lack of some thing to take in, that he experienced been with “the Colonel” when he commanded the Second Cavalry, and, as lengthy as he experienced a cent, his outdated colonel ought to not undergo. My father, who had stepped into an additional home as he heard the bell ring, hearing some thing of the dialogue, came out into the hall. The outdated Irishman, as quickly as he noticed him, drew himself up and saluted, and repeated to the Common, with tears streaming down his cheeks, what he had just claimed to us. My father was really significantly touched, thanked him heartily for his kindness and generosity, but instructed him that he did not will need the things he experienced introduced and could not choose them. This seemed to disappoint the old soldier drastically, and he pleaded so challenging to be allowed to existing the materials to his previous colonel, whom he thought to be in want of them, that at previous my father said that he would accept the basket and ship it to the clinic, for the ill and wounded, who ended up seriously in excellent have to have. While he was not contented, he submitted to this compromise, and then to our shock and dismay, in bidding the Typical great-bye, threw his arms all-around him and was trying to kiss him, when “Dan” and I interfered. As he was leaving, he said: Good-bye, Colonel! God bless ye! If I could have obtained in excess of in time I would have been with ye!

A day or two soon after that, when “Dan” was doorkeeper, a few Federal officers, a colonel, a important, and a physician, identified as and questioned to see Typical Lee. They were revealed into the parlour, offered their cards, and claimed they ideal to fork out their respects as officers of the United States Army. When Dan went out with the 3 playing cards, he was informed by some one particular that my father was up stairs engaged with some other visitor, so he returned and told them this and they departed. When my father came down, was proven the cards and informed of the 3 site visitors, he was rather place out at Dan’s not having introduced him the cards at the time, and that afternoon mounted him on 1 of his horses and despatched him in excess of to Manchester, where by they have been camped, to glimpse up the three officers and to tell them he would be glad to see them at any time they may possibly be delighted to contact. Even so, Dan failed to find them.

He had a further check out at this time which affected him deeply. Two Accomplice soldiers in incredibly dilapidated apparel, worn and emaciated in physique, came to see him. They claimed they experienced been picked from about sixty other fellows, too ragged to appear themselves, to supply him a dwelling in the mountains of Virginia. The house was a excellent property and farm, and close to by was a defile, in some rugged hills, from which they could defy the entire Federal Army. They produced this offer you of a house and their protection simply because there was a report that he was about to be indicted for treason. The General experienced to decrease to go with them, but the tears arrived into his eyes at this hearty exhibition of loyalty….

CHAPTER IX – A Personal CITIZEN
My father remained quietly in Richmond with my mom and sisters. He was now a private citizen for the initially time in his lifestyle. As he had usually been a superior soldier, so now he turned a fantastic citizen. My father’s tips to all his outdated officers and adult males was to post to the authority of the land and to keep at residence, now that their indigenous States wanted them additional than ever. His suggestions and instance experienced good influence with all….

…..The home he was occupying in Richmond belonged to Mr. John Stewart, of “Brook Hill,” who was mentioned for his devotion to the trigger of the South and his kindness to all people who had experienced in the conflict. My brother Custis experienced rented it at the time he was appointed on Mr. Davis’s staff members. A mess experienced been set up there by my brother and many other officers on duty in Richmond. In time, my mom and sister experienced been designed members of it, and it experienced been the headquarters of all of the family throughout the war, when in town. My father was desirous of building some settlement with his landlord for its prolonged use, but before he could just take the remaining methods my mom gained the following notice from Mr. Stewart:

. . . I am not presuming on your good feeling, when I really feel that you will imagine me, to start with, that you and yours are heartily welcome to the property as long as your usefulness sales opportunities you to continue to be in Richmond and, up coming, that you owe me almost nothing, but, if you insist on spending, that the payment must be in Accomplice forex, for which by itself it was rented to your son. You do not know how a great deal gratification it is, and will manage me and my entire relatives during the remainder of our life, to reflect that we have been introduced into contact, and to know and to recognize you and all that are dear to you.

My father had been presented, considering the fact that the surrender, residences, lands, and money, as perfectly as positions as president of organization associations and chartered corporations…..Until eventually his demise, he was regularly in receipt of these types of provides, all of which he considered suitable to decrease. He wrote to Basic Lengthy:

I am wanting for some little, silent house in the woods, the place I can procure shelter and my every day bread, if permitted by the victor. I wish to get Mrs. Lee out of the town as quickly as functional.

It so occurred that practically accurately what he was searching for was just then presented to him. Mrs. Elizabeth Randolph Cocke, of Cumberland County, a granddaughter of Edmund Randolph, experienced on her estate a modest cottage which, with the land attached, she placed at his disposal. The retired predicament of this small residence, and the cordial way in which Mrs. Cocke insisted on his coming, induced my father to acknowledge her invitation.

….The latter component of June, my father, mother, brother Custis, and sisters went to “Derwent,” the identify of the small position which was to be his residence for that summer….”
