The castle was designed from the 12th century by the barons of Beynac (one particular of the four baronies of Périgord) to close the valley. The sheer cliff facial area getting ample to discourage any assault from that facet, the defences were being built up on the plateau: double crenellated partitions, double moats, a single of which was a deepened natural ravine, double barbican.

The oldest element of the castle is a huge, sq.-shaped, Romanesque retain with vertical sides and couple of openings, held together with connected check out towers and equipped with a slim spiral staircase terminating on a crenellated terrace. At the time of the Hundred Years’ War, the fortress at Beynac was in French hands. The Dordogne was the border between France and England. The Dordogne location was the theatre of numerous struggles for impact, rivalries and occasionally battles amongst the English and French supporters. Even so, the castles fell far more normally by ruse and intrigue relatively than by immediate assault, simply because the armies wanted to acquire these castles were exceptionally pricey: only the richest nobles and kings could procure them.
The castle was purchased in 1962 by Lucien Grosso who has restored it.
