The huge 7-Up Olympic Grocery signal identifies this developing as a previous corner store. Rebuilt in 2005, this 1909 Edwardian setting up was just one of the to start with professional structures erected in the Municipality of Stage Gray. The municipality was proven in 1908 just south of the City of Vancouver’s southernmost boundary of 16th Avenue. Stage Grey and the Metropolis of Vancouver amalgamated in 1929. The building was erected in 1909 by J.B. Foley, a neighborhood real estate agent. The corner business unit at 698 West 16th was a grocery or confectionery retail outlet continuously from 1911 right up until the mid 1990s. The !rst store was the Samuel Barker & Sons grocery keep. This was followed by a string of grocers till 1914 when it grew to become the Heather Marketplace, and then in 1930 the Heather Confectionery. From 1940 to 1965 the Beckett loved ones operated the Heather Confectionery which turned Becketts’ Pink & White from 1960 to 1970. When the Beckett spouse and children moved from both equally the household unit on 16th and the retail store, the Chow family’s Golden Star Grocery and subsequently the Kim family’s Olympic Grocery carried on the corner keep tradition. The primary ideas for the redevelopment of the creating in 2005 concerned rehabilitating the authentic structure, but due to serious structural issues the setting up was dismantled and as significantly of the first exterior cloth as achievable was
re-utilised. This features a great deal of the floor storey siding, the dentils and the grocery indication. The new building appears much as the original constructing did in 1909. The interior of the building is wholly new, and provides a excellent contrast to the fully first Connaught Residences in Kitsilano (Household #9 and #10 on the tour). The finished creating ties into the strata developments to the east and south, and
retains the grocery store in situ, which today features as a pictures studio.
Tiny is regarded about the unit at 3208 Heather Street. The tackle only appears in metropolis data as the James C. Bradley Magnificence Parlour and Barber involving 1927 and
1939, usually it is absent from metropolis records. The original configuration of the setting up experienced a 4-bedroom, just one toilet household unit upstairs, obtainable from the eastern conclude of the W 16th Avenue façade, and from an inner ladder in the store.
