Chios (Greek: Χίος, pronounced [ˈçio̞s] alternate transliterations Khíos and Híos) is the fifth largest of the Greek islands, located in the Aegean Sea, 7 kilometres (5 miles) off the Asia Small coastline. The island is separated from Turkey by the Chios Strait. The island is famous for its sturdy merchant transport community, its exceptional mastic gum and its medieval villages. The eleventh century monastery of “Nea Moni”, a UNESCO Environment Heritage Site, is positioned on the island.
