Memorial Window (depth) to Caroline Ann Halford (d1895).
By Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907), 1895.
The above Window is focused to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Caroline Ann, spouse of Robert Halford JP of this City. Obt March 21st 1895.
Charles Eamer Kempe was a painter of partitions, ceilings and woodwork of church buildings in the 1860s. The style then in vogue reflected a resurgence of desire to high church procedures. Kempe’s education served him well, and he started out his very own stained glass business, CE Kempe & Co in London, in 1868. He was not a properly trained artist, but was even so artistic, and equipped to suggest tips which could be created by his artists and cartoonists. He insisted that only the firm’s title really should take the credit history for the common of perform developed, and that specific users of the studio continue being anonymous.
Kempe perfected the use of silver stain on apparent glass, which leaves a yellow tint, which could be fragile or deep dependent on the amount of money of stain. His finest stylistic affect was the stained glass of Northern Germany and Flanders from the 16th Century. He took numerous visits to Europe, generally taking the Kempe Organization artists with him. The insignia of Kempe, from about 1895 until finally his loss of life in 1907 was a wheatsheaf, from his family’s coat of arms. After his death, the agency was run by 4 of his directors, including his cousin, Walter Tower. The insignia then transformed to a wheatsheaf with a black tower.
