Charles Eamer Kempe was a painter of walls, ceilings and woodwork of church buildings in the 1860s. The fashion then in vogue mirrored a resurgence of desire to high church tactics. Kempe’s instruction served him properly, and he started his very own stained glass organization, CE Kempe & Co in London, in 1868. He was not a properly trained artist, but was nevertheless artistic, and in a position to suggest strategies which could be designed by his artists and cartoonists.
