252 JAMES Road SOUTH
At the south-west corner of Herkimer and James Street South, business magnate Tunis B. Griffith erected a palatial home in 1891 that superbly exemplifies the daring and flamboyant character of late Victorian architecture.
Intended by pointed out area architect W. A. Edwards, 252 James Avenue South is an fantastic illustration of the Richardsonian Romanesque model of architecture — the finest of its variety in Hamilton. Attribute of this model are the large, rounded arches established on limited columns, the projecting round and sq. towers, the steeply pitched roofs, and the solid masonry partitions enlivened by rock-faced stone and terracotta trim.
Inside, the roomy entrance corridor and stairway reflect an elegance of decoration in the elaborately carved woodwork and the colourful stained glass panels.
Proprietors of the house have all been notable men of the local community. The original operator, Tunis B. Griffith, accomplished achievement as manager of the Hamilton Avenue Railway Sir John S. Hendrie, businessman and politician, owned the residence through the time he served as Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, and his son, Main William Ian S. Hendrie, a distinguished armed forces guy and president of the Hamilton Bridge Will work Company, inherited the household from his parents. In 1937 the making was bought to Sam Henson and subsequently converted into flats.
Crucial to the preservation of the creating are the unique capabilities of the east, north and south facades, such as but not restricted to the masonry walls, the hipped roof with cross gables, the slate roofing, the higher, patterned chimneys and projecting towers, the windows and doorways, and the carved terracotta and sandstone trim and, in the inside, the vestibule and entrance hallway with its fire area, doorways, stairway, and stained glass home windows.
