Godwit
The godwits are a group of large, lengthy-billed, extended-legged and strongly migratory waders of the chicken genus Limosa. Their extensive expenditures permit them to probe deeply in the sand for aquatic worms and molluscs. They recurrent tidal shorelines, breeding in northern climates in summer time and migrating south in winter season. In their wintertime assortment, they flock together wherever meals is abundant. A feminine bar-tailed godwit holds the history for the longest non-cease flight for a land fowl.
They can be distinguished from the curlews by their straight or slightly upturned charges, and from the dowitchers by their more time legs. The winter season plumages are pretty drab, but 3 species have reddish underparts when breeding. The females are appreciably greater than the males.
Godwits were being as soon as a preferred British dish. Sir Thomas Browne writing in about 1682 observed that godwits “were accounted the daintiest dish in England”.
The English name was to start with recorded in about 1416–7 and is believed to imitate the bird’s contact. The genus title Limosa is from Latin and indicates “muddy”, from limus, “mud”.
In addition, there are two or 3 species of fossil prehistoric godwits. Limosa vanrossemi is recognized from the Monterey Formation (Late Miocene, approx. 6 mya) of Lompoc, United States. Limosa lacrimosa is known from the Early Pliocene of Western Mongolia (Kurochkin, 1985). Limosa gypsorum of the Late Eocene (Montmartre Development, some 35 mya) of France may perhaps have basically been a curlew or some fowl ancestral to both equally curlews and godwits (and maybe other Scolopacidae), or even a rail, becoming placed in the monotypic genus Montirallus by some (Olson, 1985). Undoubtedly, curlews and godwits are fairly ancient and in some respects primitive lineages of scolopacids, additional complicating the assignment of this kind of probably basal forms.
In a 2001 research comparing the ratios cerebrum to brain volumes in different dinosaur species, Hans C. E. Larsson discovered that much more derived dinosaurs frequently experienced proportionally much more voluminous cerebrum. Limosa gypsorum, then regarded as a Numenius species, was a discrepancy in this standard craze. L. gypsorum was only 63% of the way amongst a typical reptilian ratio and that of modern day birds. However, this may be explainable if the endocast was distorted, as it had been formerly depicted in the previous by Deschaseaux, who is described by Larsson as calling the endocast “a little anteroposteriorly sheared and laterally compressed.”
