Godwit
The godwits are a group of massive, extensive-billed, long-legged and strongly migratory waders of the fowl genus Limosa. Their prolonged payments permit them to probe deeply in the sand for aquatic worms and molluscs. They recurrent tidal shorelines, breeding in northern climates in summer season and migrating south in winter season. In their winter season vary, they flock collectively where meals is plentiful. A female bar-tailed godwit retains the document for the longest non-quit flight for a land chicken.
They can be distinguished from the curlews by their straight or somewhat upturned charges, and from the dowitchers by their lengthier legs. The wintertime plumages are rather drab, but 3 species have reddish underparts when breeding. The girls are appreciably larger sized than the males.
Godwits ended up once a well-liked British dish. Sir Thomas Browne producing in about 1682 noted that godwits “ended up accounted the daintiest dish in England”.
The English name was 1st recorded in about 1416–7 and is considered to imitate the bird’s simply call. The genus title Limosa is from Latin and suggests “muddy”, from limus, “mud”.
In addition, there are two or three species of fossil prehistoric godwits. Limosa vanrossemi is recognised from the Monterey Formation (Late Miocene, approx. 6 mya) of Lompoc, United States. Limosa lacrimosa is regarded from the Early Pliocene of Western Mongolia (Kurochkin, 1985). Limosa gypsorum of the Late Eocene (Montmartre Formation, some 35 mya) of France could have truly been a curlew or some bird ancestral to each curlews and godwits (and possibly other Scolopacidae), or even a rail, being placed in the monotypic genus Montirallus by some (Olson, 1985). Unquestionably, curlews and godwits are alternatively ancient and in some respects primitive lineages of scolopacids, even more complicating the assignment of these kinds of perhaps basal types.
In a 2001 examine comparing the ratios cerebrum to brain volumes in many dinosaur species, Hans C. E. Larsson located that much more derived dinosaurs frequently had proportionally more voluminous cerebrum. Limosa gypsorum, then regarded as a Numenius species, was a discrepancy in this common pattern. L. gypsorum was only 63% of the way concerning a normal reptilian ratio and that of fashionable birds. Nonetheless, this may perhaps be explainable if the endocast was distorted, as it had been formerly depicted in the earlier by Deschaseaux, who is explained by Larsson as calling the endocast “a little bit anteroposteriorly sheared and laterally compressed.”
