Shikra – feeding on prey

The shikra (Accipiter badius) is a little fowl of prey in the spouse and children Accipitridae identified extensively dispersed in Asia and Africa the place it is also known as the minimal banded goshawk. The African forms may possibly depict a different species but have normally been regarded as as subspecies of the shikra. The shikra is extremely similar in look to other sparrowhawk species together with the Chinese goshawk and Eurasian sparrowhawk. They have a sharp two notice simply call and have the typical flap and glide flight. Their calls are imitated by drongos and the frequent hawk-cuckoo resembles it in plumage.

The shikra is a little raptor (26–30 cm very long) and like most other Accipiter hawks, this species has brief rounded wings and a slender and considerably long tail. Adults are whitish on the underside with fantastic rufous bars though the upperparts are grey. The lower stomach is much less barred and the thighs are whitish. Males have a red iris whilst the women have a significantly less red (yellowish orange) iris and brownish upperparts aside from heavier barring on the underparts. The ladies are marginally larger. The mesial stripe on the throat is dark but narrow. In flight the male observed from beneath displays a light wing lining (underwing coverts) and has blackish wing recommendations. When seen from previously mentioned the tail bands are faintly marked on the lateral tail feathers and not as strongly marked as in the Eurasian sparrowhawk. The central tail feathers are unbanded and only have a darkish terminal band. Juveniles have dark streaks and places on the upper breast and the wing is narrowly barred although the tail has dim but slender bands. A post juvenile transitional plumage is located with incredibly sturdy barring on the contour feathers of the underside. The phone is pee-wee, the initially notice remaining larger and the 2nd remaining lengthier. In flight the calls are shorter and sharper kik-ki … kik-ki. The Chinese sparrowhawk is fairly comparable in appearance but has swollen shiny orange ceres and yellow legs with the wing tips totally black.

The shikra is uncovered in a vary of habitats including forests, farmland and urban regions. They are generally observed singly or in pairs. The flight is typical with flaps and glides. Through the breeding year pairs will soar on thermals and stoop at just about every other. Their flight typically draws alarms among the smaller sized birds and squirrels. They feed on rodents (including Meriones hurrianae), squirrels, small birds, modest reptiles (primarily lizards but often smaller snakes) and bugs. Compact birds generally dive via foliage to steer clear of a shikra and a Compact Blue Kingfisher has been noticed diving into drinking water to escape. Babblers have been observed to rally together to push absent a shikra. They will descend to the ground to feast on emerging winged termites, hunt at dusk for modest bats (such as Cynopterus sphinx) and in uncommon situations they may even resort to feed on carrion. In 1 instance a male was identified feeding on a useless chick at the nest. Their phone calls are mimicked by drongos and this conduct is believed to assist in stealing meals by alarming other birds that the drongos affiliate with.

The breeding time in India is in summertime from March to June. The nest is a system equivalent to that of crows lined with grass. Both equally sexes aid make the nest, twigs being carried in their feet. Like crows, they may perhaps also make use of steel wires. The regular clutch is 3 to 4 eggs (when eggs are eradicated they lay replacements and one observer famous that they could lay as many as 7 in a time) which are pale bluish grey stippled on the wide stop in black. The incubation period is 18 to 21 times.
