This is a threaded insert with #8 machine thread inside and it suits in a 1/4-inch hole. Threaded inserts are incredibly helpful but they adore to screw in crooked. My technique for location them straight is demonstrated in this sequence of photographs.
I use a extensive #8 screw with two nuts jammed together to drive the insert. With these a extended screw I can power the insert to go in straight. I don a glove on my still left hand in case I slip with the screwdriver.
