2 custom “exhibition” weaving boat shuttles

2 custom

These are two custom boat shuttles that I designed on request. 1 is open up-base and the other shut-bottom. Each have the exact same wood layering: Fiddleback (hard) maple top and bottom, black walnut 2nd layer, and bird’s eye maple in centre. The reddish coloured wooden in the slot and the surround about the yarn-hole is a pink ivory inlay. The shuttles are sanded to 2000-grit and have coats of blonde shellac (as a initial coat) followed by 6 coats of apparent oil-primarily based urethane, and 3 coats of carnauba wax. The 3/16″ rods within the cavities are superior-grade stainless steel to resist corrosion.

Boat shuttles are utilised for weaving on huge-body looms and are “thrown” again and forth by the loom’s lose to type the weft in textiles. The rods keep 4″ long wood or plastic bobbins that are wound with different kinds of yarn to form the wanted weft sample.
