Saint-Alphonse Church is a Roman Catholic church situated in Thetford Mines in Quebec (Canada). In neo-Romanesque type, it was developed in 1907.
Background
Thetford Mines was established in 1876, right after the discovery of a deposit of asbestos (additional exactly chrysotile) by Joseph Fecteau. To start with recognised as Kingsville, it was renamed Thetford Mines in 1905.

Located in downtown Thetford Mines, on Notre-Dame Street, it is one of the largest churches in the diocese of Quebec; a building of great heritage value with three rood screens, its pulpit, its statues and paintings. Its capacity is 1128 places on the first floor and 948 in the rood screens, for a total of 2076 places

The church of Saint-Alphonse, located in the municipality of Thetford-Mines, is a Catholic place of worship built from 1907. This building has a cross plan whose dimensions are 51.8 m long by 24, 4 m in front and 39 m in the transept. Its elevations are blocks of gray granite with a rustic finish, each of the cut stones measuring approximately 30.5 cm by 56 cm. This building is topped with a straight gable roof covered with Canadian-style sheet metal. The openings (doors and windows) are highlighted by the dark green color of the woodwork.

Its facades are dotted with fine details, including oculus, rectangular windows surmounted by a semicircular arch on the second floor and twin bays (identical windows grouped in pairs) on the third floor. The pediment is also a very present motif.

Its harmonic main facade offers a tripartite volumetric composition. In the center of it is the main tower whose entrance is surmounted by a pediment. A series of three windows detail the central part. The base of the ornate bell tower consists of another decorated pediment and a half-rose. Two square towers surmounted by gables border the facade. Originally, grandiose gilded statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Alphonse, the work of Louis Jobin, were at the top of the pinnacles, with a bulbous crown.

Finally, the neo-Romanesque style of the church can be recognized by its barrel arches, its rounded vault with multiple coffers and its transept. The interior ornamentation is inspired by the Baroque.
